There have been some positive things floating around the internet about meditation - it calms the mind, brings clarity and peace to thoughts, strengthens the parasympathetic nervous system. That sounds nice, but ...
Here are some big reasons why you shouldn't meditate - and how to overcome them!
I don't have time to mediate
Taking 3 minutes every day to clear my mind, slow my thoughts, and calm my nervous system is great return on investment. The ego/thinking mind can negotiate with you and you might spend more time listing reasons why you don't have time to meditate than the amount of time it would actually take to meditate! If I don’t empty the trash can of thoughts that I have been building, it might overflow in my mind, and I will be digging in yesterday’s trash for today’s sustenance.
I don't know how to meditate
I also didn't know how to make roasted veggies, or where to buy gluten free cookies, or when I should leave for the train… and then I looked it up online and gave it a try. There are so many good videos online and classes in every city for meditation. Put on some good instrumental music - I like to listen to MC Yogi.
Try this meditation for beginners, or extent the breathe time to make it more challenging.
I don't have a place to meditate
When my in-home altar is properly blessed, meditation pillow mound makes me feel like buddha, and I’m wearing yoga pants that hold me in and push me out in all the right places - then, and only then, will I have a perfect meditation space. The perfectionist in me is full of excuses not to start. The time, space, and place will never be completely perfect. Who says you have to be completely alone? Who says you have to be sitting? Who says your eyes have to be closed? Who says you have to be chanting? Listening? Visualizing? The only real criteria for meditation is breathing. Everything else is a tool to help your mind relax. Just breathe, and know you already are perfect.
I am not a spiritual person
Faith in the unknown is not a requirement for calming your mind relaxing your nervous system. Meditation has physical health benefits that can be measured. Spirituality can be added or omitted from any activity. Find your own experience.
It is hard!
Yes, It is uncomfortable to sit with myself and my own thoughts. My mind wanders from thought to thought. Sometimes I think mean and upsetting things. Sometimes I get bored. Sometimes I just can’t stop thinking-thinking-thinking. You wouldn't expect to be great at anything your first try. Keep at it, meditation will get easier, and then it will get harder again. Because you are growing. Your ego is learning new ways to distract you, just as you learn new ways to calm your mind. Keep up.
All out of excuses? Me too. Meditation is the greatest gift that you can give to yourself and others.
Attention. Focus. Clarity.Yes! I want more of that!
Peace, Love, Sat Nam
